With the recent shift to remote work, our home offices are getting more action than usual. Without the right habits in place, it’s easy to get off-track and find yourself in a mess of paper piles and office supplies. Taking the time to organize your home office can increase your productivity, clear your mind, and allow you to focus more effectively.  And, since we’re all going to be working from home for the foreseeable future we should invest in the right set-up.

Understanding Your Goals

Start by understanding what you need to accomplish in this space by asking yourself how it’s used. Is this your everyday “WFH” office? Your personal home office? The back-up for your mobile office? Determining how your space is used can help you put the proper organizational systems in place.

Creating a Beautiful Space

Before you can focus on the details, it’s important to make sure you have the right foundation. Start by taking a look at the furniture in your office.

  • Start with your desk or work table. With multiple monitors, headsets, microphones and tons of paperwork, is it really large enough for you to be productive?  Does it have enough storage? Is it comfortable to sit at?

  • Examine the surrounding wall and storage space. Is it easy to identify where items are stored? Is it easy to access these items? Do you need additional storage space?

  • With virtual conferencing, lighting has become all-important. Do you have overhead lighting? Task lighting? Do you need additional lighting?

Critically examining these aspects of your office will help you determine what you can do to improve the space and your working experience. Additionally, your office space should be inspiring, comfortable, and wonderful to use. Investing in desk or office supplies that you love will also make your workday more enjoyable. Do you prefer leather, acrylic, colorful, or neutral? The Container Store has plenty of desk accessories and storage solutions.
