The pumpkins may still be out and Halloween candy may already be finding its way into the house, but if you’re hosting this holiday season, October is actually the perfect time to start thinking ahead.
Not because we’re trying to rush the season.
Quite the opposite.
A little preparation now can mean a lot less scrambling later and more time to actually enjoy the people gathering around your table.
Before the cooking, decorating, houseguests, and holiday plans begin piling up, take a look at the spaces you’ll use most during the season. A few thoughtful edits now can make your home feel calmer, more functional, and ready for whatever the holidays bring.
Here are five places to start.
1. Start With the Dining Room
The dining room has a funny way of becoming a catch-all when it isn’t being used. Mail lands on the table. Boxes get tucked into corners. Extra things find their way onto the buffet or sideboard. And then suddenly, you need the room for Thanksgiving dinner.
Before adding holiday décor, clear the room back to what you actually want and use.
Take a look at:
- Table linens with stains, holes, or that you never reach for
- Chipped or mismatched dishes and glassware
- Serving pieces you haven’t used in years
- Worn placemats and napkins
- Décor that no longer fits your style
- Extra items collecting on the buffet or sideboard
You don’t need to empty the entire room. The goal is simply to create enough breathing room for the things and people you want to enjoy this season.
2. Give Your Kitchen a Pre-Holiday Edit
Your kitchen is about to get a workout. Before the extra groceries, baking supplies, serving platters, and holiday treats arrive, make some room.
Start with the easiest decisions first: expired food, duplicate utensils, storage containers without lids, chipped dishes, worn kitchen towels, or gadgets you forgot you owned.
Then take a look at your entertaining pieces.
Do you know where your roasting pan is?
Can you easily find the serving spoons?
Are the holiday dishes accessible, or are they buried behind things you haven’t used since 2019?
A little editing and reorganizing now means you won’t be searching through cabinets while the turkey is resting and your guests are arriving.
3. Think About How Your Home Will Actually Be Used
Holiday organizing isn’t just about making things look nice. It’s about making your home work for what’s coming.
If you’ll have overnight guests, spend a few minutes in the guest room.
If you’ll be entertaining, think about where coats, bags, drinks, appetizers, and extra seating will go.
If your kids will be home more often, consider the spaces everyone naturally gathers.
Ask yourself:
What tends to feel chaotic during the holidays?
That’s often the best place to start.
Maybe the entryway needs a better system for shoes and coats.
Maybe the guest room needs to stop doubling as storage.
Maybe the dining room needs to be cleared before you even think about the centerpiece.
Organizing around real life, not just how a space looks, is what makes the biggest difference.
4. Edit Holiday Décor Before You Decorate
As the holiday bins start coming out, resist the urge to simply unpack everything and find a place for it.
Instead, edit as you go.
Do you still love it?
Does it still work?
Would you buy it again today?
Broken ornaments, tired wreaths, tangled lights, faded ribbons, and decorations you’ve skipped over for the past three years probably don’t need to go back into storage one more time.
And remember: sentimental and meaningful are not the same as “I’ve owned this for a long time.” Keep the things that genuinely make the season feel like yours. Then let the rest go.
And if decorating itself is the part you dread? Smartly Organized can help with that, too. From Halloween décor to holiday decorating and even taking everything back down afterward, we can help make the process feel a whole lot easier.
5. Make a Simple Plan Before November Arrives
You don’t need a complicated holiday binder or color-coded spreadsheet to feel organized. You just need to get a few things out of your head and onto paper.
Think through:
- Important dates and gatherings
- Guests staying in your home
- Decorating
- Gifts
- Meals and entertaining
- Holiday cards
- Travel
- Home projects you’d like finished beforehand
- Anything you can delegate or get help with
The goal isn’t to plan every moment of the next two months. It’s to see what’s coming early enough that you still have choices. That’s exactly why we created our Holiday Checklist.
It walks you through the season week by week, beginning in October, so you can tackle a few things at a time instead of trying to remember everything at once.
