One of my most amazing projects was a shoe organization project for a client who had 250 pairs of boots and shoes. She wanted to SEE them ALL and we were tasked with finding a solution.
Our client had a large room adjacent to her bedroom that was being used as an office, but she was willing to relocate her office. She also wanted to use the space for yoga and meditation. This meant that maintaining open floor space was also important.
Shoe Organization Tips
Spoiler alert: We used an IKEA shelving solution to really tackle this shoe organization challenge.
To start, we flanked two entire walls with an adjustable floor to ceiling shelving system that included a lower rod for hanging her large collection of boots and a few drawers for accessories. Boots have a tendency to topple over. Because of this, hanging them ensured they stayed in place and kept the room neat and clean. Hanging clips were used to hold a pair of boots together on the rod, because they add stability. We love this boot-hanging solution in traditional closets too, space permitting.
Boot Stays are another go-to tool for general boot organization. These inserts keep your boots standing tall for instance, and not flopping over. As a result, they help to keep your closet neat and tidy. Next, all other shoes were organized and displayed on the shelves above.

Shoe storage can be tricky for many of our clients so we always come armed with multiple solutions. Shoe boxes, baskets, and over the door shoe bags offer great alternatives, for instance.
Shoes can also be stored in clear shoe boxes. These boxes protect shoes from dust and create a more uniform look. A photo can be added to the outside of the box, which makes finding what you want faster. Additionally, shoe boxes with a drop front opening makes access easier compared to the traditional style shoe box with a lid.
Open shelving and slanted shelves are most common for the easy viewing and access.
