Are you drowning in clutter and feeling overwhelmed by the chaos in your space? Don’t worry – you’re not alone. The accumulation of everyday clutter can sneak up on you as you go about your busy life. Decluttering and organizing can seem like daunting tasks, but with the right approach, you can transform your home into a peaceful and organized oasis.
At Smartly Organized, we’re passionate about helping people reclaim control over their spaces through professional organizing and decluttering services. Whether you’re a decluttering newbie or a seasoned pro, we’ve got some tips and tricks to share that will make the process a breeze.
Let’s start with the basics: how and what should you declutter?
We always recommend beginning with decluttering, before organizing. Often referred to as the donate/discard process it involves identifying items that are no longer serving a purpose in your life. We’ve developed a simple hierarchy based on the value of items, making it easy to prioritize what stays and what goes.
One of the key strategies we advocate for is decluttering by category rather than tackling an entire room at once. This approach not only makes the process more manageable but also helps you maintain a clutter-free environment in the long run. Categories allow you to consider similar items in context to others and typically makes the decisions much easier.
Another way to approach the decluttering process is by size. If you are facing a very cluttered space it can become more manageable by removing the largest unwanted item(s). We often see playrooms filled with large toys that children have outgrown, or garages filled with recycling. Both these spaces appear overwhelming to start because there is no space to work and it’s hard to see where to start. Removing these larger items first makes space to do other decision-making and provides the motivation to keep going.
Responsible Re-Homing
Once you have decided what to let go you can focus on how to responsibly re-home them. In our local community, we’re fortunate to have access to a variety of resources for donating and selling items, including brick-and-mortar consignment shops, charitable organizations that offer pick-up services, and online resale platforms. No matter the item or its value, there’s always a sustainable solution.
As we transition into spring, now is the perfect time to reassess your belongings and let go of items that no longer serve you. Whether it’s last season’s clothes gathering dust in your closet or broken beach toys taking up valuable space in your garage, there’s no shortage of opportunities to declutter and refresh your space.
And let’s not forget about those cardboard boxes you’ve been saving! Whether you’re saving them for a future move or using them to organize your belongings, it’s time to let go of excess clutter and create space for the things that truly matter.
Decluttering and organizing can feel like a daunting task, but with the right approach and a little guidance, you can transform your space into a sanctuary of peace and tranquility. The first step of removing items you do not want enables you to make space for the things you do want. This can immediately help create more organization and sense of relief, control, and lightness.
