Last fall, my husband and I faced an urgent need to downsize our 2,500-sq-ft home in way too little time, for a move to a 1,400-sq-ft apartment. Since our rural community had no professional downsizers, I went to the National Association of Professional Organizers’ website to see who I might find. I read profiles of several people in our vicinity, and chose Andrea Walker of Smartly Organized because she had taken the time to gain accreditation, remain active in the national organization, and incorporate professional standards in her business plan.

From day one, Andrea presented us with a logical, doable plan to meet our difficult goal. She also took on all the projects we did not want to do ourselves, working tirelessly to get many of our still-usable items sold online, and connecting us with a fine arts and antiques auctioneer who took away and sold many of our more valuable items.

Andrea also assigned a team of about five staff members to work with us from early October through our move-in day in late November. Among other things, they moved 40 reams of documents from our second-floor office to our driveway, where they went into an on-the-spot-shredding truck. They helped us separate the needed, the still-useful and the trash, and worked with the 1-800-Got-Junk team (twice!) to make sure our house was debris-free before the final cleaning for the buyers. And then they drove a van, full of fragile items, food from our refrigerator, and house plants, to our apartment, and put it all where it belonged. As the movers emptied the van, Andrea’s ladies unpacked boxes, organized our new cupboards, hung clothes–and even made the bed!

I’d been collecting information in preparation for an eventual retirement-related move for the last few years, and I truly had every possible scenario covered, with lists of items to be discarded, sold, donated, etc. and accounts established with all of the relevant resale platforms.

So what could go wrong?

What is NASMM?

NASMM stands for the National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers. It is the premier organization supporting the Senior Move Management industry with education and resources. How is Smartly Organized different from a moving company?

Moving companies are the “muscle” you hire to safely move your possessions from point A to point B. We love our movers. They work hard and fast but they are not organizers. At Smartly Organized we are organizational experts, decluttering pros, and space planners. We assist with tough downsizing decisions by providing the structure and support for a smooth and easy process. We support the packing and unpacking process so you can quickly settle into your new home. Most movers will pack everything they see without regard to where it is going, if it is needed, or if it is literally trash (remember they are working fast!). They will unpack your items which means removing the boxes. Your items will be placed on any available surface (including the floor) making it even harder for you to get around in your new home. On the other hand, our team will organize, assign homes, put away and style your new home.

How much does it cost? How do you charge for your services?

Every move is different, and we tailor our services to fit your needs. Smartly Organized provides a customized written proposal for every client addressing your specific needs. We do this after an initial consultation and walk-thru of your home where we gather all the details of your move. The estimate is based on the number of hours we expect the tasks will take. This is a dynamic process and sometimes you’ll end up wanting more help, and sometimes we find you embrace the process and do more on your own. We remain flexible to your needs.

Can you help me decide what to take, donate, or sell?

Yes, our team is trained to work closely with you to curate the items that are most important to you. Our simple system allows you to make all the decisions while we provide the emotional support and the physical labor of lifting, packing, unpacking and arranging. We also know what to do with items you are not taking and provide options for you to make informed decisions.

How long will it take?
Every project is different and depends on how much there is to do in your home and the level of support you need and want from our team. Whether you are moving to a smaller, same size, or larger home, we recommend that you review and edit your belongings to determine not only what will fit but also what items are no longer serving you. Moving is the perfect opportunity to lighten your load.
What do I do with everything I am not taking?

We work with numerous trusted resources to help with items you no longer need or want. We work with consigners, auction houses, estate sale companies and charitable organizations to re-home your useful items. We always keep an eye out for family items or valuables to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle.

Can you help me get my house ready for sale?

Absolutely. We are referred by many top real estate companies to prepare and stage homes to quickly get them on the market. We help you declutter, rearrange, and edit furniture to present your home to appeal to buyers. The great thing about using Smartly Organized to prepare your house for sale is that this upfront effort pays off by saving you time later with sorting and packing for your move. The transition to your new home is easier and less stressful.

How will I find a mover?

Smartly Organized has a list of trusted movers who meet our high standards that we work with all the time. We will coordinate onsite meetings, evaluate estimates for you, and manage the timeline and details. We are your partner and advocate, and we demand exceptional service from our service providers.

My parents are moving. Can you create a plan to help them?

We work with adult children all the time who want to support their parents’ move but live far away or have limited time. We work with you to define the plan and determine what you can handle and where you need help. We can help with as much or as little as you need and make the process as smooth and easy as possible for you, too. We document our process and share photos with family members that live out of town so they can be part of the process.

What can I expect when working with you - how many team members will I work with each session? How many hours each day?

We start your project with the end in mind – specifically, your move date and timeline – and we schedule and staff your sessions accordingly. The size of the team, number of hours per session, and the frequency of sessions will vary depending on your specific activities and timeline. Don’t worry though – you will work one-on-one with an organizer when reviewing and editing items. The team is well-versed in managing the process without overwhelming you.
