There’s a common misconception about getting organized. That it requires a full day. A full plan. A full overhaul of your entire home.

But in our experience, the biggest shifts don’t come from doing everything. They come from doing one thing, intentionally.

At Smartly Organized, we call this a smart reset organization approach. A simple, focused way to reset one space at a time so you can feel more organized without the overwhelm.

And in honor of National Get Organized Day (April 26), we’re sharing five simple Smart Resets you can do this week.

No overwhelm. No perfection required. Just a place to begin.

1. Clear a Surface

Create immediate breathing room

Start with a surface you see every day:

  • kitchen counter
  • bathroom vanity
  • nightstand

Take everything off.

Then ask:

  • What actually belongs here daily?
  • What’s just “landing” here out of habit?

Wipe it down. Put back only the essentials.

👉 Goal: 50% less on the surface than before

This one reset alone can shift how your entire space feels.

🌟Overachiever? Find a tray, caddy or other small container to corral the essentials and immediately elevate your space.

2. Reset a Drawer

Turn chaos into something usable

Choose one drawer:

  • junk drawer
  • utensil drawer
  • bathroom drawer

Take everything out (yes, everything).

Then:

  1. Toss trash + broken items
  2. Group like items together
  3. Put items back with space between categories

If needed, use small containers or dividers, but only after editing.

👉 Rule: If you forgot you had it, you probably don’t need it

🌟Overachiever? Consolidate like-items from other spaces to define a specific home and get a head start on other drawers.

3. One Shelf Reset

Edit + simplify

Pick one shelf only:

  • pantry
  • closet
  • cabinet

Remove everything from that shelf.

Then:

  • Check expiration dates
  • Remove duplicates
  • Let go of anything you don’t actually use

When putting things back:

  • Keep like items together
  • Leave visible space between groups

👉 Goal: You should be able to see everything at a glance

🌟 Overachiever? Add labels to create structure and order going forward

4. Reset Your Drop Zone

Make daily life easier

This is the space that collects everything:

  • keys
  • bags
  • mail
  • shoes

Instead of letting it pile up, give it structure.

Ask:

  • What lands here every day?
  • What should land here?

Then create simple homes:

  • tray for keys
  • bin for mail
  • hook for bags

👉 Rule: If it lands here daily, it needs a designated spot

This one reset reduces daily friction immediately.

🌟 Overachiever? Take it a step further and edit and let go of the junk mail, old shoes, empty outdated contents from purses or backpacks.

5. Let It Leave

Complete the reset

This is where most resets break down.

Once you’ve decluttered:

  • put items in a donation bag
  • place the bag by your door or in your car

Then schedule:

  • a drop-off
  • or a pickup

👉 Timeline: Within 48 hours

Because until it leaves your home… the clutter is still there.

🌟 Overachiever? Drive to the charity bin or donation drop-off in your area the same day!

Why This Works

Your environment influences your thoughts.
Your thoughts influence your energy.
And your energy shapes how you move through your day.

You don’t need a perfectly organized home to feel better. You just need a shift. A Smart Reset creates that shift, quickly, simply, and meaningfully.

Rinse and repeat

Do a Smart Reset every week: Use little pockets of time to reset a different surface, drawer, shelf, or other small cluttered space each week to exercise your organizational muscles. Eventually, you will find it grows easier and easier.

Ready for More?

Remember… If you only do one of these, it counts. A Smart Reset isn’t about finishing your home. It’s about changing how your home feels, one space at a time.

Start small.
Finish something.
Feel the shift.
